Free Gun Locks

Weekly alert: Free gun locks

Suggested Caption:

Guns are the leading cause of death for US children and teens, since surpassing car accidents in 2020.

In response to this crisis and a growing number of recent child firearm injuries in St. Louis, SSM Health and some other St. Louis hospitals began offering free gun locks at local facilities.

Not many St. Louisans know about this ongoing effort. iHeard data shows:
– only 15% of respondents had heard about it the week of June 5th-12th.
– More African Americans have heard about it than Whites (26% vs 9%).
– Older adults (50+) were more likely to have heard compared to those <50 years (24% vs 11%).
– Most people reported hearing it on TV/Radio.

Why are gun locks important for safety?

Suggested Caption:

Earlier this year, Mayor O. Tishaura Jones urged St. Louisans to be responsible firearm owners in light of recent child shootings:

“As a mom, I know how important it is that we take every step we can to keep our babies safe. […] We need to take immediate action to protect our children. If you have a gun in the house, be a responsible gun owner; store firearms locked and unloaded and pick up a free gun lock to help you and your loved ones safe.”

Only 15% of St. Louisans know about the new free gun lock initiative at some local hospitals like BJC and SSM Health. Share this information with someone you know to create a safer environment for everyone.
