Awareness of updated COVID vaccine growing, but St. Louisans say it’s hard to find

It’s been three weeks since the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the updated COVID-19 vaccine for people six months and older. More than 1 in 3 St. Louis adults (36%) have heard about the FDA’s approval, but many are also hearing that the vaccine is hard to find in St. Louis right now.

Although pharmacy chains in St. Louis have received a supply of COVID vaccine for adults, other sites are still waiting. The St. Louis County Department of Public Health, for example, hasn’t received enough doses to schedule appointments at its health clinics. Pharmacies are still waiting for the pediatric vaccine.

St. Louisans looking for a COVID shot can avoid frustration by taking these two steps. First, visit Vaccines.org to find a location near your, check vaccine availability, and learn about getting the vaccine at no cost. Second, call your doctor, pharmacy or clinic before you leave home to make sure they have the vaccine on hand.

With the federal public health emergency for COVID-19 ending in May, COVID-19 vaccine distribution has shifted from the federal government to the commercial market. Getting vaccines from suppliers to pharmacies and other community outlets is now underway. According to Vaccines.gov, availability of the updated COVID-19 vaccines “will continue to increase in the coming weeks.”

This week’s report is based on responses from a panel of 159 St. Louis City and St. Louis County adult residents surveyed from Saturday, September 30, to Monday, October 2, 2023. Explore these data and more at iHeardSTL.
