In a panel of St. Louis adults, 40% of those who use Twitter reported that their trust in the information they see on the social media platform has declined over the past 6 months. Additionally, 36% of survey respondents heard about Twitter’s account verification changes.
These recent developments are particularly concerning for health information monitoring, as Twitter suspended its COVID-19 misinformation policies in November 2023 (NPR). Past research has shown that misinformation spreads faster than accurate information on the platform (Science).
