POLL: St. Louisans rate the winter storm response

In 3 out of 4 categories, St. Louis adults were satisfied with the local response to the January 4-5 winter storm. But snow removal from streets and roads was a different story.

Poll results

In the iHeard STL weekly poll for January 11-13, St. Louisans rated their satisfaction from 1 to 10 (10=highest satisfaction) on four aspects of the local storm response.  They were most satisfied with weather information they received and least satisfied with snow removal. Scores were:

  • Satisfaction with the weather information you received about the storm: 7.9 of 10
  • Satisfaction with decisions by schools and businesses to close or operate remotely: 7.7
  • Satisfaction with local sources getting the word out about winter weather emergency services such as warming centers: 6.6
  • Satisfaction with snow removal from streets and roads after the storm: 3.7

St. Louisans rated their overall satisfaction with the local storm response at just 4.7, likely dragged down by dissatisfaction with snow removal.

Making it better: St. Louisans have ideas

The poll also asked respondents, “How do you think officials in the St. Louis area can improve support for residents during future winter storms?” Well over half (58%) of the 135 suggestions provided focused on improving snow removal, especially on side streets and in neighborhoods. Two novel ideas included:

  • If you’re not going to salt the streets, give neighborhoods the salt so residents can do it themselves;
  • Increase accountability by showing in real time which roads have been plowed, using a publicly facing street map;
