Vaccine discussions have been prominent in the news and social media recently. When asked if they’d heard anything about vaccines in the last two weeks, 52% of St. Louis adults said “yes.” However, only 13% said they had questions about vaccines.
Who’s hearing about vaccines?
Among 377 adults surveyed in four states (MO, NE, GA, NC), those ages 50+ were more likely to report hearing about vaccines in the last two weeks than those under 50 (60% vs 45%). White respondents were more likely than Hispanics and Blacks to hear about vaccines in the last two weeks (63% vs. 56% vs. 44%, respectively).
Who has questions about vaccines? Mostly parents.
Across the four states, just 14% reported having questions about vaccines. Parents with minor children in the home were more likely than those with no children in the home to report having questions (19% vs 12%).
What vaccine questions do people have?
Across the four states, 51 of 377 respondents had questions about vaccines, and 47 shared specific questions. The most common questions were about vaccine safety and side effects (19 questions); how well vaccines work in preventing disease (13 questions) and whether vaccines are needed to prevent disease (11 questions).
