Masking and Long COVID

Weekly alert: Does masking protect against Long COVID?

Does masking protect against Long COVID? Let’s clear the air!

According to our recent survey, most respondents believe masks prevent getting COVID-19 (80%) and prevent spreading it to others (84%). However, only 49% of our panel think masks can lower the risks of developing Long COVID, with 18% unsure.

Inaccurate claims linking masks to “mask-induced exhaustion syndrome” have also been circulating on social media. But let’s set the record straight: Long COVID is caused by the initial COVID infection, not masking (CDC). Wearing a mask reduces the chances of contracting and spreading COVID-19 (CDC), meaning it can potentially lower the risk of someone developing Long COVID. You can protect yourself and others by wearing a mask when appropriate, like in crowded indoor spaces.

Long COVID is real. “Mask-induced exhaustion syndrome,” a false condition spreading on social media, IS NOT.

Wearing a mask can lower your chances of getting Long COVID and of getting COVID-19 and spreading it in the first place.

Unsure what to say when someone says that masking leads to Long COVID?

You can share that people with Long COVID had to get COVID-19 first – and since masks help to lower the chance of getting COVID in the first place, masking does not lead to Long COVID.

If you hear “the COVID emergency is over, we don’t need to wear masks anymore”, you can say…

Are you hearing that masking isn’t needed now that “COVID is over?” — but you still want to wear a mask?

You can let them know that COVID is still here, and that wearing masks can lower the chances of someone getting infected. Masking is helpful to keep everyone safe in crowded indoor spaces, and when with someone who can get dangerously sick from COVID.
