News coverage of diabetes

Completed 2015

KEY QUESTION
What are the characteristics of diabetes-related health news stories in Black and general-population newspapers, and can we identify features of diabetes stories that increase interest and understanding among African Americans?
REACH
African Americans bear a significant burden of diabetes. About 3.2 million African Americans age 20 and older have diabetes and are nearly 2 times more likely to have the disease compared to Whites of similar age. Although recent studies have explored media reporting of cancer it is important to examine diabetes coverage specifically and its effects in media outlets that serve serving minority populations.
