Diamond Shruumz products linked to mysterious illness

Due to severe health risks, the FDA is investigating the recall of all Diamond Shruumz products. These include chocolate bars, cones, and gummies that contain psychoactive (brain affecting) ingredients. This week, 12% of St. Louisans surveyed heard about the recall, up from 8% last week.

About Diamond Shruumz products

“Edibles” containing psychoactive compounds, such as cannabis or mushroom extracts, are becoming popular. They are often sold as gummy candies, chocolates, or other snack foods. Diamond Shruumz products are sold nationwide online and in retail stores that sell CBD and smoke/vape products. FDA tests have found that these products contain ingredients not disclosed on the package labels, including illicit substances and harmful contaminants.

Health threat: severe, mysterious illness

As of August 16, Diamond Shruumz have been linked to 145 cases of illness in 29 states, including Missouri. Cases have included seizures and respiratory failure, as well as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and hallucinations. So far, 59 of the cases have resulted in hospitalization, and two deaths are suspected to be linked to Diamond Shruumz. Doctors and scientists aren’t sure which ingredients or combination of ingredients might be causing such serious illness.

Public awareness low, but increasing

Among 579 adults surveyed from 5 states, only 22% reported hearing about the Diamond Shruumz recall in the past week, up from 17% one week ago. Older adults (50+) were more aware of the recall than those under 50 (18% vs. 32%), as were Black adults compared to Whites (29% vs. 19%).
